Vietnamese officials seize more Catholic parish land

Vietnamese authorities have again seized land from a Redemptorist community near Hanoi.
The Redemptorist parish has been the scene of frequent clashes between police and the faithful, who have resisted the government’s encroachment unsuccessfully.
In the latest seizure of property, the government officials demolished a kindergarten that had been seized some years ago. Vietnamese Catholics believe that the land has been expropriated simply because of its value on the real-estate market.
The latest move by government officials comes just after a meeting between Vatican diplomats and Vietnamese leaders, at which the two sides discussed the prospects for full diplomatic relations. At that meeting, Vietnamese representatives claimed that their government fully respects religious liberty.
